Visa Information

Your entry into Germany should be as smoothly as possible. Please find below all necessary information about the visa application process matching the local requirements. This information is exclusive.

The German Embassy Addis Ababa has jurisdiction over your visa application, if your main destination is the Federal Republic of Germany.

Please be advised that the German Embassy in Addis Ababa is using the Visa Information System (VIS), which allows Schengen States to exchange visa data. VIS necessitates various changes to the visa application process, such as fingerprint scans. Visa applicants must therefore apply in person at the visa section of the Embassy.

The category of the visa (Schengen or national visa) depends on the duration of the intended stay. The required supporting documents depend on the purpose of the visit.
Example: For skilled employment up to 90 days, a Schengen-visa is required. However, the requirements of the leaflet “Employment Visa” of a national visa are applied.

Change in Schengen-Visa Process for Ethiopian Citizens

On 1 December 2017 the processing time regarding Schengen-Visa changed for Ethiopian applicants. The processing period will be two weeks. As this is an automated process, the Embassy has no influence on the length of this period.
Therefore please keep in mind to book your appointment in due time.
Longer waiting periods for the application of Schengen-visa (tourist, business, etc.) can be expected during and before the main season (summer holiday and travel season). You are advised to book an appointment to apply for a Schengen-visa 2 – 3 months in advance, even if, at that stage, you still do not yet have all your documents ready.
All documents have to be complete and submitted in the original (see information pamphlets below). Incomplete applications may be denied. Non-requested submitted documents (by e-mail or fax) cannot be taken into account.

Formal obligation

The issue of a formal obligation over the alien authorities in Germany or over a German Embassy abroad is not discharging from the necessity of an original invitation letter.

Transit Visa

Ethiopian passport holders who are travelling via an airport in one of the Schengen-countries in order to reach their final destination outside the Schengen-region only require a transit visa if they do not hold a valid visa for an EU Member State or for a State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area of 2 May 1992, Canada, Japan, or the United States of America.

Each applicant has to appear in person.
Exceptions:
seriously ill persons, applicants whose finger prints have been submitted during the past 5 years. The case-by-case decision is made by the Embassy.

Standardised visa fees for all categories amount to 60.00 Euro. Payment is to be made in Birr (ETB) on the day of application. Because of currency fluctuation, statements in national currency are not given. Fees are not refundable, regardless of any decision.

Please direct any enquiries dircectly from our website using the contact form.

The booking of an appointment is exclusively done by using the German Embassy’s online booking system for short term visa (Schengen-Visa) as well as long term visa (more than 90 days within 180 days). If you intend to travel in a group you will also have to book individual appointment.

Return of Passport

As soon as the Embassy decided on your visa application, you will be contacted and you can collect your passport after 14 days.
In general, a passport can only be collected by the applicant. Should this not be possible, you are entitled to authorize a representative.

Please check your visa upon receipt immediately! Your visa states your full name, passport number, and your photo, furthermore the number of days of your stay, and validity of the visa.
If all data is correct, nothing stands between you and your trip to Germany.

However, should you find incorrect data on your visa sticker, please inform us immediately! We will be happy to issue a new visa.

The issuance of a Schengen-visa does not base a claim on entry. The final decision is taken at the Immigration of a Schengen-state by the border police. It is possible that the border police requests submission of your documents regarding financial means, duration and means of your visit as well as health insurance. Therefore, please have copies of all of your visa documents (incl. invitation from Germany, hotel reservation, travel/health insurance and like) at hand.

There can be various reasons for a denial of your visa application. The Embassy will cite the causes in a notice of denial.
You are welcome to apply again with complete, convincing and verifiable documents.
